Eastward Companies President and Founder William Marsh has been associated with the building industry"from the beginning" as his father owned a construction company. "I couldn't wait to hop in dad's pick-up truck and go to work on a job with him... like most young boys I loved the saws, the lumber, the coffee breaks...the fact that I got my own lunch pail"
Q: What did growing up with a father who owned a construction business teach you?
A: I began working construction with my father for an hourly wage at 14. My father was a ‘true old fashioned general contractor” in that he built his own foundations, completed his own finish work, plaster, trim, landscaping with both light commercial and residential projects...But above all, working with my father in the building industry taught me the value of hard work... I was indoctrinated with a hard work ethic because my parents had lived through the depression.
Q: What are the greatest joys that you find with your career in the building industry?
A: Creativity and the ability to step back at the end of the day to see what you have accomplished. A great personal satisfaction comes from ‘doing the job right’ and having a homeowner appreciate a job well done. It has also been a great joy to be able to give back to the community that gave me the opportunity to build a company on its sandy shores.
Q: How have you seen the building industry change over the past 35 years?
A: The level of sophistication is higher and the building field has become very specialized. The equipment is also highly specialized...even the hammers and nails...the lumber industry has changed drastically as well as product availability. All through the interior of a home has changed– the tile, dry wall, appliances...really the whole industry has changed dramatically.
Q: What is the current focus of Eastward Companies?
A: Same as always, to build a top quality single family home. With land values skyrocketing the company has also more recently focused on remodels, additions and renovations.
